Transformers: Beast Wars is making a come back. To commemorate the series’ 25th anniversary, IDW Publishing has announced it will publish brand-new Transformers: Beast Wars in early 2021. Erik Burnham will write the series with artist Josh Burcham as the illustrator.
According to THR, the comic book series two will reintroduce the future tribes of Cybertron with characters such as Maximals and Predacons. The series will also feature new characters including Optimus Primal, Rattrap, and friends set out to stop the Predacons from using a stolen time machine.
“Transformers” colorist Josh Burcham, the comic will hew closely to the premise of the cartoon, when Cybertron is populated by the Autobots and Decepticons’ descendants, the Maximals and the Predacons. When a new, Predacon, Megatron steals the Golden Disk, and a ship capable of time travel, Optimus Primal and a team of Maximals — Rattrap, Rhinox, Cheetor, and the new character Nyx — must stop him.
“Beast Wars was a wonderful and weird pivot from the Transformers setup to which I was first introduced,” Erik Burnham said. “Big personalities, unexpected twists, and actual stakes all popped up regularly on the show, and those are tools that I enjoy using to build new stories. Best of all, the enthusiasm from everyone involved in this project has been so high that I’m feeling constantly inspired!” Josh Burcham added, “I’m so thrilled to be a part of this team. I was a ‘90s kid and even though I knew about Generation 1, Beast Wars was really my G1. It’s still my favorite iteration, and I consider it such a privilege to be able to bring the characters to life in this brand new series. Let the Beast Wars rage on!”
Beast Wars: Transformers (Beasties: Transformers) debuted in 1996 and ended on March 7, 1999. The series served as the flagship of the Transformers: Beast Wars franchise. The series featured the Maximals and Predacons, descendants of the Autobots and Decepticons respectively, and was set in the future of the “original” Transformers continuity; however, it was eventually revealed that they had traveled back in time before the series began and were actually on a prehistoric Earth some time in between when Optimus Prime and Megatron first crash-landed on Earth and the time when they awoke. Beast Wars was set up as a sequel to the first Transformers series.
