Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel has found it’s directing. Voltron: Legendary Defender and The Legend of Korra‘s Joaquim Dos Santos, Soul‘s Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson have been hired by the animation studio to direct the animated film, Variety is reporting. Peter Ramsey, who directed the first film with Bob Persichetti, and Rodney Rothman, will executive produce with Aditya Sood.
The Into the Spider-Verse sequel will be written by Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ David Callaham. Lord and Miller will also produce the film along with Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Christina Steinberg, and Alonzo Ruvalcaba.
The directing team said in a joint statement that the crew behind the ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ set such a ridiculously high bar, and we’re humbled to take on the challenge of charting the next chapter in the story of Miles Morales.
Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld will likely return to the lend their voice as Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, respectively. Jake Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Velez, Zoë Kravitz, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, and Nicolas Cage are expected to reprise their roles from the first film. Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099 will also appear in the film.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is scheduled to open in theaters on Oct. 7, 2022.
