The official Star Wars has revealed that LucasFilm hired Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok) to direct and co-write a new live-action Star Wars feature film for theatrical release.
Waititi, who recently directed the season finale of The Mandalorian, will be joined by Krysty Wilson (1917, Last Night in Soho) to co-write the screenplay. Wilson will be the second woman to co-write a Star Wars movie after Leigh Brackett co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back with Lawrence Kasdan.
The latest entry in the franchise, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker) grossed over $1.074 billion worldwide, becoming the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2019.
Release dates for the new projects have not yet been announced.
