Back in 2018, there were reports that Jordan Peele approached Disney about a new Gargoyles adaption based on the classic 90s animated television series. Now co-creator Greg Weisman has revealed that he’d love to make a Gargoyles live-action movie with Jordan Peele directing.
Additionally, Weisman also revealed that Peele’s project didn’t move forward because Disney execs were not interested in making a live-action Gargoyles at the time.
“My understanding — not inside information, just my understanding — is that he expressed an interest in the property. And Disney didn’t say no, But by not saying yes, that answers the question. You know, they didn’t want to say no to Jordan Peele, but they also didn’t want to say yes to Gargoyles. So it just didn’t go anywhere.”
Gargoyles animated television series originally aired from October 24, 1994, to February 15, 1997. The series inspired a video game adaptation and a spin-off comic series in 1995. The show received a comic book sequel published from 2006 to 2009.
One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was the age of gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night, We were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and we live again! We are defenders of the night! We are Gargoyles!
