Disney was not joking when they reveal that Avatar 2, & 3 will be released in 2021 and 2022 respectively followed by Avatar 4 in 2025 and Avatar 5 in 2027. James Cameron revealed that they finished scripts for all four of those films, and have already captured the performances for two and three, as well as the first part of the Avatar fourth.
James Cameron made the reveal in the anniversary piece for Variety.
“From 2013 until now we’ve mostly designed the whole world across four new movies. We’ve written, finished scripts for all four of those films. We’ve cast them, and we’ve [performance] captured movie 2, movie 3, and the first part of movie 4. We’re mostly done with the live action. I’ve got a couple of months in New Zealand in spring, so we’re kind of on track with what we set out to do.
People don’t really understand the scope and complexity of the process. It’s like making two and a half big animated films. A typical big animated film takes about four years, so, if you do the math on that, we’re kind of right on schedule for December 2021.”
The official Twitter account for the Avatar franchise revealed last month that Avatar 2 had wrapped filming for 2019. The account revealed that the movie crew wrapped live-action filming for the year on Novembre 29.
Avatar is set to hit theaters in December 2021, with the other three movies slated to be released in 2022, 2025 and 2027. Returning cast members include Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver. The first Avatar film is the highest-grossing film worldwide with over $2.7 billion in box office gross.
