Waititi’s live-action film adaptation will be based on Otomo manga instead of the 1988 classic sci-fi. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Andrew Lazar (American Sniper) producing the film with a script by Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures acquired the rights to bring the anime in big screen back in 2002 for 7-figures deal with manga publisher Kodansha. Warner Bros.’ is planning to split the manga into two films, with each film covering three books in the series.
Otomo Launch Akira manga series in Young Magazine from 1982 until 1990. The manga received an anime film adaptation directed by Katsuhiro Otomo himself, produced by Ryōhei Suzuki and Shunzō Katō and written by Otomo and Izo Hashimoto. Akira is considered to be one of the greatest animated and science fiction movies of all time.
