Nickelodeon may have just hinted at SpongeBob Squarepant’s sexuality. The network official Twitter shared three Pride Month posters of some of the Children’s network famous LGBTQ+ characters and allies celebrating the month. The posters designed by Ramzy Masrithe features Korra, Michael D. Cohen, and SpongeBob.
While Cohen from Henry Danger revealed in 2019 that he had transitioned from female to male in his 20s, Korra positioned as a bisexual in the final scene of The Legend of Korra when she was seen holding Asami’s hand and leaping into the Spirit World. However, SpongeBob‘s sexuality has never been revealed, and now fans questioning if the tweet identifies the character as gay.
SpongeBob SquarePants cartoons show was created by Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon. Hillenburg took many of the show’s ideas from his 1989 unpublished educational comic book titled The Intertidal Zone. The character was first named SpongeBoy, and the series was to be called SpongeBoy Ahoy!, but were both changed, as the name was already trademarked. The anime show premiered on July 17, 1999.
The animated television series first film “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie” was released in theatres in 2004. A stand-alone sequel titled The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water was released on February 6, 2015. The 3rd SpongeBob Squarepants animated film is scheduled for release on July 31, 2020.
