Sony Pictures Animation social media accounts has announced that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel will arrive in theatres on April 8th, 2022. The news comes after the animated film’s official Twitter account teased that something was on the horizon.

According to reports, the sequel will follow Miles Morales and a group of interdimensional webslingers. It is also confirmed that the movie will also Japanese Spider-Man Takuya Yamashiro, the main protagonist from Toei’s 1978 Spider-Man live-action show.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 will be directed by Joaquin Dos Santos with a script from David Callaham. The first Into the Spiderverse movie was directed by Bob Persichetti (The Little Prince) and direct alongside Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians) with a script by Phil Lord (The LEGO Movie ). Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won numerous awards, including Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards, 46th Annie Awards, and 76th Golden Globe Awards.

The movie follows Miles Morales, who gained superpowers​ similar to Spider-Man after being bitten​ by a spider genetically engineered by Spider-Man’s nemesis Norman Osborn in an attempt to duplicate those abilities. Miles is the second Spider-Man to appear in Ultimate Marvel. The character was voiced by Shameik Moore (Dope).

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse grossed a total of $375.5 million worldwide, against a production budget of $90 million.

Miles Morales first appeared in Ultimate Fallout #4 (August 2011), following the death of Peter Parker. The character was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli. Miles was inspired by both former U.S. President Barack Obama and American actor Donald Glover.
