Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi revealed In an interview with Screen Rant that his Akira live-action film adaptation will be based on the manga and the classic anime film.
“I always felt like it was something that could do with a unique take,” he explained. “I don’t believe the world needs a remake of the anime. I think, for me, it would be — if there’s any real possibility for doing it — I would really just want to look at an adaptation of the books in a new way.”
Waititi also revealed that the deal is not done yet, but he’s been talking “a little bit” with the studio behind the project.
“I don’t know, it’s sort of early days really I’m just kind of entertaining that conversation because I’ve been a huge fan of that property for a long time,” he said.
Katsuhiro Otomo serialized Akira manga in the pages of Young Magazine from 1982 until 1990. An anime film adaptation directed by Katsuhiro Otomo himself was released in 1988. The manga series takes place in a longer time frame than the film.
